Expository message on Hillsong’s Oceans lyrics {Matthew 14:22-32}

I was out praying and praising God for his goodness over my life when I began to sing Oceans by Hillsong over and over again.

I’ve been singing this song for months before I discovered the lyrics can be traced to the story of Peter on the sea.

Reading from Matthew 14:22-32 when Jesus was walking on the sea, the desciples saw him and called him a ghost. Jesus identified Himself and told them never to be scared. Peter trying to clear his doubt told Jesus to command him to come meet Him on the sea.

Jesus replied and commanded him to come. Then peter got down from the boat and started walking towards Jesus. At some point when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink.

He immediately cried out for Jesus to save him. Jesus held his hand and said “O ye of little faith, why did you doubt?’’

Hillsong’s Oceans lyrics

Spirit lead me

where my trust is without borders

Let me walk upon the water

whenever you’d call me

Take me deeper

where my feet will never wander

And my faith will be made stronger

In the presence of my savior.

The relationship of the passage and the lyrics.

Peter asked Jesus to lead him to walk upon the water and Jesus called upon him to come. Based on the trust he had in Jesus, he got down from the boat and began to walk on the water.

He was going deeper but his feet wandered and he began to sink. This was because he doubted even in the presence of the savior. This was why Jesus condemned him saying “O ye of little faith, why did you doubt?’’.

So I feel Hillsong in a way got the inspiration of OCEANS from the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water.

So she asked the Holy Spirit to lead and make her ready to walk upon the water anytime the Spirit wants. Also, she asked for a deeper journey where her faith will be made stronger than that of Peter.

What do you also feel about the relationship? Yea or nay? Let’s hear your response in the comment box.
